"The rest will be performing jobs like putting out merchandise, waiting on people, or manning cash registers." I really don't think this will happen. At several local stores, I check out my own merchandise scanning the UPC's myself. Besides, we don't NEED 50 million more clerks. We're going to have to come up with and entirely new economic model. Perhaps a minimum income for everyone, with jobs being a perk for the worthy? Even the job you described, designing a custom HVAC system, could be replaced with an expert system.
