I believe you are correct.

From experience with a sibling, you can take distributions earlier by setting up a 72T.
Biggest problem is that rules say you must keep up the withdrawals until 59 1/2 or 60 months whichever is longer.

This particular account could have been making enough income to cover the withdrawals,
but the advisor didn't have it set up that way, forcing sales at the most inopportune time.

Gotta love those "professionals."
