Re: Breast cancer - there has been some actual progress on the treatment side and on the understanding of the different types of breast cancer.

Quick summary - boatload of money being spent, considerable real progress.

There is a huge industry/political movement for research, of course.

See the Wikipedia article on breast cancer for much more information.

Breast cancer cause about 1% of all deaths worldwide, and about 6% of all cancer deaths.

About 6% of US women will be diagnosed with breast cancer over their lifetime. Roughly, about 3.5% of deaths of women in the US are from breast cancer. Note that these two numbers will cover different subsets of the population and are not strictly comparable.

For a diagnosis today, IN THE USA, the likely hood of death from breast cancer is probably under 50%.

A good UK site, with lots of info - see the graphs showing benefits of early detection (stage vs. survival) and country comparison chart, with the US just under Iceland in five year survival.

Here's an example of the research progress - note the line "reverse over 85 years of dogma"

en.wikipedia.org

Simplified, cancer cell place stress on surrounding cells, often with oxidation, and cause the surrounding cells to produce growth factors which help the cancer to grow.

For 2007 Heart Disease accounted for 24.5% of US deaths, and Cancers 23.2% . Heart disease has been ramping down very rapidly as a cause of death.
