Petz - Re: "Windows NT 4.0 stinks at even the 4 processor level"

Are you making all this up?

Check out some of the multi-processor results that 4 way and 6 -way SMP systems achieve under Windows NT.

These systems achieve incredible transaction rates under NT .

Company Press Release

ALR's Revolution 6X6 Server Breaks 13,000 Intel-based tpmC Barrier

Achieves New World Record With Industry's Best TPC-C Price/Performance

IRVINE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 6, 1997--

Company Establishes Strong Foothold In The Enterprise

Server Market

Advanced Logic Research (ALR), a wholly owned subsidiary of Gateway 2000 (NYSE:GTW), announced
record-breaking TPC-C benchmark results for its flagship ALR Revolution 6X6 symmetric multiprocessing (SMP)
enterprise server.

In a published report released Thursday, the ALR Revolution 6X6 achieved the industry's highest Intel-architecture
performance level and the lowest cost per transaction for delivering Microsoft Windows NT Server based solutions
across the enterprise.

Garnering an unprecedented score of 13,089.30 transactions per minute (tpmC) at a price/performance ratio of
$35.11 per tpmC, the ALR Revolution 6X6 Enterprise Server provides enterprise-level customers operating in
database-intensive environments with the highest transaction processing performance at the lowest cost per
transaction.

The ALR Revolution 6X6's superb performance surpasses benchmarks recorded by more expensive RISC-based
systems such as the eight- processor Siemens Nixdorf RM600 Model E20 with a score of 11,503.03 tpmC at
$168/tpmC. The ALR Revolution 6X6 also outperforms its competitors, including a score of 11,055.70 tpmC at
$43.92/tpmC on a four-processor Compaq ProLiant 7000 6/200 Model 1S and a score of 10,537.53 tpmC at
$42/tpmC on a four-processor Dell PowerEdge 6100.

The TPC-C results were accomplished on the ALR Revolution 6X6 Enterprise Server configured with six Pentium
Pro processors with 1-MB L2 cache per processor, running Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0 Enterprise Edition
and SQL Server 6.5 Enterprise Edition. The ALR Revolution 6X6 Enterprise Server achieved the record-breaking
price/performance simulating a load of more than 10,000 concurrent users.

''ALR and Intel have a long-standing relationship that has delivered a series of award winning server products to
the market,'' said Gene Lu, president of ALR. ''The record results delivered by ALR's six Intel Pentium Pro
processor-based system with 1-MB L2 cache demonstrates not only the highest level of throughput on Microsoft's
SQL Server 6.5 Enterprise Edition, but the best return on investment in the SMP server market.''

''ALR's TPC-C results underscore the strength of Intel's Pentium Pro processor with 1MB of L2 cache for
transaction-processing applications,'' said Tom MacDonald, director of marketing for Intel's Enterprise Server
Group. ''Fully configured with six Pentium Pro processors, the ALR Revolution 6X6's absolute performance and
price/performance demonstrate the headroom of the Intel architecture.''

''We are pleased with these record results published by ALR,'' said John Nordlinger, lead product manager for
SQL Server at Microsoft. ''Combined with built-in availability provided by the Enterprise Editions of SQL Server
and Windows NT Server, this result demonstrates that enterprise customers can deploy their mission critical
applications with confidence using BackOffice, while improving total cost of ownership.''

Today's results represent a nearly 23 percent performance increase over the previous record-breaking tpmC score
achieved by the ALR Revolution 6X6 Enterprise Server, which stunned the industry by being the first
Intel-architecture SMP server to break the 10,000 tpmC barrier. ALR's tpmC score of 13,089.30 features a
performance rating unsurpassed by any Intel architecture-based system, using any database or any operating
system.

(a) Competitive data current as of 11/05/97

The TPC-C benchmark measures online transaction processing (OLTP) performance and is centered on the
principal activities (transactions) of an order-entry environment. These transactions include entering and delivering
orders, recording payments, checking the status of orders, and monitoring the level of warehouse stock. While the
benchmark portrays the activity of a wholesale supplier, TPC-C is not limited to the activity of any particular
business segment, but, rather represents any industry that must manage, sell, or distribute a product or service.
TPC-C results are audited by one of several auditors certified by the Transaction Processing Performance
Council. A full disclosure report may be obtained from the Council at 777 North First Street, Suite 600, San Jose,
CA 95112. The comparisons contained in this release are taken directly from results posted on the TPC Web site,
