OK, everybody thinks that perhaps there was some "big" deal to report that had to be dropped at the last minute. Here is my guess:

1) Apple bought Power Computing
2) Power Computing, before the acqusition, was getting ready to go head to head with Dell selling PC boxes on line as well as MAC clones.
3) Let's say that Steve decided to go ahead and do just that - take on Dell head to head with on line ordering selling PCs as well as MACs. This fits well with long term plans because Rhapsody will run on intel and Apple now owns the facility in Texas.
4) Last week the papers announced that the Power Computer deal was hung up in the court and has not cleared.
5) You can't announce business on a company you do not own so Apple decides to start with selling MACs. It will give them a chance to get the bugs out of the system.
6) Once the papers have cleared, Apple can sell PC boxes on line and make them in Texas super cheap.

The other stuff NCs, etc was never scheduled for now because it is all tied to Rhapsody servers - that's January.
