Virtuous Victoria Values - an excellent era. Unfortunately, cultural decline means doors must be locked and police carry weapons more serious than a truncheon.

China has got some things right - they do not put up with criminals. [Actual criminals, not people of divergent opinion]

Putting melamine in milk was fatal for those who did it. What amazed me about that episode was that Fonterra [a major NZ shareholder] allowed the local company to produce milk powder without the stringent quality control that I would have required. Heck, even for petrol for cars, I was laying on the quality control to avoid contaminants. That milk powder was to feed babies.

Unfortunately, the cultural norm in China is "whatever you can get away with to get hold of the money" rather than pride in a job well done and pleasure that the recipient of the good work is appreciative in a process of mutual identity formation. Not that most western companies operate like that either though some do. Steve Jobs didn't battle cancer and liver failure and replacement to come back to work to get more money because he needs more money. Google is doing good works and not just to get loads of loot from suckers.

China is still at "the Devil take the hindmost" bottom of Maslow's hierarchy of needs with the wealthy into self-aggrandisement rather than Steve Jobs/Dean Kamen ideology.
