Since the establishment of cross-strait standards for LED street lighting, top LED players from both Taiwan and China plan to test LED street lamps in Xiamen, Fujian Province and Guangzhou, Guangdong Province to develop and promote a standard verification platform.
Companies that are reportedly involved in the trial projects are Taiwan-based Epistar, Everlight Electronics, Bright LED Electronics, Lite-On Technology subsidiary Leotek Electronics, AU Optronics subsidiary Lextar and Delta Electronics, as well as China's Xiamen Sanan Optoelectronics and Hangzhou Silan Microelectronics.
Taiwan's Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) is also cooperating with local governments to evaluate test sites, and it indicated that funding for the projects will be allocated by the governments. Currently two sites have been determined, Xiamen's Huoju Hi-Tech Industrial Development Zone and line one of Guangzhou's Metro subway system, according to ITRI.
The scale of the Xiamen project is expected to be about 1,000 LED street lamps with completion set for May-June of 2011, and for Guangzhou, up to 10,000-20,000 indoor LED lamps will be installed in subway stations along the Metro line with completion scheduled for the second half of 2011, ITRI noted.
Industry sources revealed that everything from upstream LED chips and chip packages to down stream end-use devices will be supplied by LED companies in Taiwan and China.
The projects will be contracted out via an open bid and more details will be announced at a later date. |
