A minor point - PGM stands for Platinum Group Metals -

If want and abbreviation for precious metals, it's PM

Pt Platinum
Pd Palladium
Os Osmium
Ir Iridium
Rh Rhodium
Ru Ruthenium

en.wikipedia.org

Note that Re Rhenium is not in the platinum group

Looking at the period table,
we see copper - silver - gold
Cu - Ag - Au are all related, and orebodies with one often contain the other.

The elements over the PGMs are -

iron Fe cobalt Co nickel Ni
Ru rhodium Rh Palladium Pd
Os iridium Ir Platinum Pt

While some Pd and Pt tend to be found in most Nickel mines, the other PGMs don't show up in iron ore deposits.
