TOKYO, JAPAN, 1997 NOV 10 (NB). A spokesman for NEC
Corporation [TOKYO:6701] says the company will announce, on
Wednesday, plans to build an experimental multimedia network in
Shantou, Guangdong Province, China. The network will connect up to
150 homes and businesses and offer Internet access and video
-on-demand.

The network will use a combination of ADSL (asynchronous digital
subscriber line), fiber to the building and fiber to the curb to connect to
personal computers and set-top boxes. Through the service, users will
be able to access the Internet, view news on demand and also enjoy
karaoke on demand, said the NEC spokesman.

The system will cost around 300 million yen ($2.42 million) and consist
of NEC made video servers, ATM switches, optical network units,
ADSL modems, set top boxes and digital terminals. The company will
also install some telephone lines and fiber optic links to enable the
system.

Official unveiling of the system will take place on Wednesday, at NEC
headquarters in Tokyo, at a ceremony attended by Chinese premier Li
Peng, the spokesman said.
