It can be fun. I had mixed hard and softwood (white pine, maple, cedar, etc.) that was managed by a state forester -- he would designate which trees to remove. Our objective was prime timber -- so there were yearly kills and firewood harvests. Lots of fun with the kids when they were young.

Unfortunately a vindictive wife took it all in a bitterly exciting divorce. :0)
