Steve, just to make life easier for Ted:

en.wikipedia.org

Originally it was a way for Thomas Jefferson to reconcile both the establishment and the free exercise clause of the First Amendment with regard to religion. This has become the officially endorsed interpretation of the First Amendment ever since.

O'Donnell could have handled that part of the debate much better. I'm really disappointed that she didn't.

By the way, here's another part of the Wiki entry that I find to be rather interesting.

> The American separation of church and state rests upon respect for the church; the [European anticlerical] separation, on indifference and hatred of the church, and of religion itself…. The constitution did not create a nation, nor its religion and institutions. It found them already existing, and was framed for the purpose of protecting them under a republican form of government, in a rule of the people, by the people, and for the people

Interesting to see the modern liberal interpretation more closely aligned with the European anticlerical position than the traditional American position. Once again, liberals want America to be more like Europe.
