Maybe it did make sense for you, but if so you are far from the norm. Most people don't want to shell out that much up front for the relatively minimal savings. Eliminating your electricity bill sounds great, but you can only do it with wind or solar, by either making an enormous investment in wind or solar (and in storage, or alternatively another type of generation), or by making a large investment and also having very low electricity use. With such low use your savings in your electricity bill (unless you live in an area with very high electricity cost) won't be all that much. If you don't have low usage. If you have normal usage or higher, your initial setup costs are very high.

So it might not even make sense, as a purely dollars and sense thing for you. (Although that doesn't measure emotional satisfaction of not having to pay this specific bill, or the feeling of contributing in some small way to what you see as a more positive future, those are subjective, so your the only one that can say how important they are for you.)
