POWER GENERATION
As one of the largest producers of electricity in North America, Ontario Power Generation operates 65 hydroelectric, 5 thermal and 3 nuclear stations producing more than 19,000 megawatts of electricity.
In fact, OPG owns one of the most diversified, low cost and low emission portfolios in North America. Our commitment is to continually improve the efficiency of our generating stations so that Ontario has the power it needs, when it needs it.
In 2009, OPG generated about 70% of the electricity in Ontario or 92.5 terawatt hours (TWh). Our 2009 generation mix consisted of 51% nuclear, 39% hydroelectric and 10% thermal electricity.

Throughout 2009, the availability of our hydroelectric stations remained at consistently high levels, finishing the year at 94.8 per cent.
OPG’s nuclear production benefited from improved performance of the Pickering B generating station. The station achieved a capability factor of 84.0 per cent in 2009. It also received its best ever peer review from the World Association of Nuclear Operators.
And, OPG’s thermal stations continued to demonstrate impressive flexibility and responsiveness in 2009 when called upon to meet Ontario’s electricity needs. |
