The flash memory does not compete with CDs. It competes with other recordable/erasable digital media such as Mini Disks, DATs and hard disks.

The capacity of CD is about 650M while the largest capacity CompactFlash (CF) is 80M or so. But if CF is to use the kind of audio compression scheme used in MD, then the capacity can be much higher.

But as I was saying, CF does not compete with CDs. It competes with the medium for portable digital recorders which are MDs and DATs. The advantage of CF is its small size and its robustness. As I understand, CFs are practically undestructable compared to MDs and DATs that has mechanical components.

I expect this to be a hit in portable recording applications where lightness and robustness is of prime concern than the fidelity of the sound. The possibilities are endless. I hope SanDisk becomes the standard for all Flash Memory based digital recording.
