The article assumes morality is a stable factor in each person. However, most caring people behave as morally good as they are able given their circumstances.

Many young people don't have the experience or knowledge of cause and effect to see the far reaching consequences of their actions. No one can be perfectly knowledgeable about such things without being omniscient. So, the young are not as likely to see the harm being done beyond the immediate benefits of the actions they are performing as are older more experienced persons. People who genuinely care about living a moral life tend to become more wise as they age and so are better able to use judgement which carries far reaching benefits for all concerned, when performing moral acts.

The girl in the story did not see significant harm being done or was able to dismiss harm to the corporation or others as insignificant related to her petty theft. but did see how it was improving quality of life for herself and probably significant other people.

A young girl may think it as a kindness to give sexual favors to anyone who wants to enjoy having sex with her but a wiser woman would be able to see how harm is done to others effected by such callous affairs. In this sense people may be fully justified in thinking themselves more moral in later years and in dismissing some earlier events as not really representative of themselves as a moral person currently.
