The reason I like the electric car is that I can charge it with my own PV system.
Unless you have a very extensive and expensive system, that would take a long time, esp. if your also using other items. In many cases by the time you charge it up (assuming your starting from near zero charge, and only using the PV system, which is a fair assumption, as your already assuming the power is out, and if you assume a full charge then you could also assume a full tank of gas), the power would be back on. Also a partially full gas tank would often either get you through the time when the power is down, or get you out of the area to where you can get gas. If your that concerned about the issue, you could always have a few spare gallons of gasoline on hand, or keep your tank half full or more.
Maybe if there was a hurricane or something, you might not be able to get out of the area, because of infrastructure damage, or because other cars block the roads, but then you couldn't get out with an EV either.
I suppose if its total armageddon, with mass electricity production not coming back, then in theory a PV system and an electric car could be the better choice, but in that case you have a lot of other things to worry about. |
