Only to the extent that it serves the public interest.

Otherwise, not much of a "public good".

And, (as I've already argued...), spending TRILLIONS of taxpayer Dollars over DECADES --- IF WAS MERELY TO DEFEND 'SAND' AND 'DATES' --- would most likely *not* be considered by any average and sane voter to be very much of a "public good".

B-U-T... spending TRILLIONS (even of borrowed money) to defend access to OIL could arguably be considered "in the national interest"....
