Lotus Gives NCs Some Java Power
Over the next few months, Lotus will finish testing and begin
marketing a set of JavaBeans, previously known by the code
name "Kona," as eSuite WorkPlace and eSuite DevPack.
These components promise to deliver on some of the promises
that Corel Office for Java couldn't, providing such basic
business applications as a word processor and a spreadsheet
written in Java.

Corel officials bristle at the suggestion that they've given up on
Java, but they recently acknowledged that their initial concept of
rewriting WordPerfect and its companion products in Java
wasn't working. From the beginning, Lotus took the approach
that its components would be as lean as possible. Considered
individually, they provide only the most basic functionality, but
they can be combined with each other or with other JavaBeans
to perform more sophisticated functions.

Even the basics will be welcome in the network computer (NC)
market, which has suffered from a scarcity of business
applications.

"This is a big day for the NC world," said Steve Tirado, product
marketing director for Java systems at Sun Microsystems Inc.
"These kind of productivity applications are things our
customers have been saying they really needed in order to move
to NCs."
