The millions of anonymous dollars the Democrats benefitted from in those two elections were from small donors... If I wanted to give $1 million to a candidate but did not want to disclose it, wouldn't it be best for me to arrange for series of small untraced donations? If Fidelity wants to buy 100,000 shares of Disney, they do not put in an order to buy 100,000 shares. They buy in small bits, often 100 shares at a time, to hide their identity in the market.
