That's true. Just compare capacities and access speeds.
Just like the introduction of MR heads 6 years ago
paved the way to higher data density without increasing
the number of heads and disks, so will GMR enable the
whole DD industry to stay on the curve.

Without advances like that we would see a limit to
areal density increases soon. Jim Porter, CEO of Disk/Trend said
at an IEEE meeting 6/10/97 that the most popular drives are 2-3 GB
now, and will be 10-20 GB by 2000. Cost per MB is expected to be
about 2 cents by then.

Obviously (from reading your posts) YOU understand all that.
