One of the main reasons WW2 was won was because...

(a) Russia did industrialise aggressively when the commies took over, courtesy of Stalin. Rightly or wrongly he pushed it big time because he wanted parity with the West at any cost.

(b) Because Russia was industrialized they were able to build tanks that could punch out panzers in huge numbers. They did get lots of help from the West of course, and even had a small number of Shermans. Shermans were nice to maintain etc but were otherwise just target material for the more advanced German tanks. Even the Russian tanks had to get in really close to be effective.

(c) ditto planes and armaments of every kind. Everything was supplemented by the West. The Russians did have huge losses as they took on the brunt of WW2. Even Stalin was not happy about that.

Facts are facts. The soviets bled the nazies dry along an incredibly huge WW2 front. More men, more tanks, more everything. Stalin was not a nice guy at all, but whoever ran the soviet union at the time would have had to undoubtedly "break some eggs".

I like the photo of the missing Nikolai Yezhov. That's what a compliant press can do for you.

/snippet
Beria had boasted to Molotov that he poisoned Stalin: "I took him out."

Khrushchev wrote in his memoirs that Beria had, immediately after the stroke, gone about "spewing hatred against [Stalin] and mocking him", and then, when Stalin showed signs of consciousness, dropped to his knees and kissed his hand. When Stalin fell unconscious again, Beria immediately stood and spat.

It's tough at the top. If your prone to using purges to get your way, I guess it gets even tougher.
