Doug; By eliminating that distribution tier Apple can drop prices to the consumer and increase what Apple sees. There has been a loss of retailers in the past ten years, in addition formerly exclusive Apple dealers now sell Wintels of all stripes. Few dealers would cry greatly if Apple went direct, as they will get the service cash cow and accessories, both more profitable than box sales.

I do not know why there was such a nul release. I cannot believe even Jobs(crass as he is known to be) would be so crass as to do such a dog and pony show, with no dog and no pony. So I think there is another shoe to drop. If not, Jobs should exit and stay away, his force would be spent.
