The only credible opposition that Obama would have in 2012 is from Mitt Romney. And if the economy does not significantly improve by then (it may not), then Romney is someone that the Americans would take a hard look at, if the Republicans care to vote for a Mormon during the primaries.

I would also watch out for the tea party as a spoiler and it would not take the Democrats to cross vote for Palin. The Tea Party can vote in Palin as they did Sharon Angle and Christine O'Donnell.

Also notice that the Repub leadership is saying that this election is about Barack Obama and his agenda, their adds are using Pelosi instead of Obama. They realize that he still remains very popular. It is his programs that they are not happy with. And his popularity could rise or even fall depending on how he deals with the Republicans in Congress. And I expect him to have a different approach since he will not have confrontationlists like Axelrod and Rahm to advise him and the calming effect of Jarred would start to show.
