My opinion, Steve, is that the way Republicans succeeded in branding the word "liberal" as a term of opprobrium is far worse than using the term "teabagger." I realize that you will likely disagree with me, but that is because of the instinctive personal revulsion you feel about the act that the word teabagger conjures in your imagination. If you can get on top of that feeling and ask what are the real consequences of the act, I think you will find that they aren't very great.

The term "liberal," on the other hand, represented a set of time honored and responsible tradition of political thought that people on the left and the right use at different times to describe their approach to politics and the real political responsibilities and tasks of society. And Republicans just trashed that tradition as if it meant nothing. And in doing so, they ushered in a new level of shallow political thought that is far more obscene and has had far more consequences than the use of the word that you find objectionable.

Let's try to distinguish between real consequences and imaginary consequences.
