WASHINGTON, D.C.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 20, 2002

Barringer, a business unit of Smiths Detection, demonstrated its new walk-through explosives detection portal at a briefing held in Washington, DC.

US Government and industry counter-terrorism experts attended the briefing and demonstration. The new Sentinel II portal closes an important security gap by making it possible to non-invasively screen people for the presence of an explosive device with the same technology currently used to screen luggage and freight. While the primary application for Sentinel II is seen as airport security, the system will also be used to enhance security for as office buildings, sports arenas and other highly trafficked areas.

John Ferrie, Group Managing Director, Smiths Aerospace commented, "The importance of this technology in combating terrorism in airports and at other high threat facilities is apparent. Sentinel II is an important addition to our detection systems product range and builds on our extensive experience in this area."

The SENTINEL II walk-through portal can screen seven people per minute. In common with other detection devices in the Smiths product range Sentinel II performs a real time chemical analysis and identifies a "fingerprint" of a target substance. The technology is so sensitive that even a minute concentration of explosives, drug residue or a chemical agent on the skin or clothing will be detected.

Headquartered in Warren, New Jersey, Barringer is the world leading developer and producer of trace detection equipment, for explosives, narcotics, chemical warfare agents and toxic industrial chemicals. The business also operates from facilities in Toronto, the UK, France and Malaysia. Smiths Aerospace is the leading transatlantic aerospace equipment company, with half its 12,000 staff and $2 billion revenues in North America. Smiths Aerospace, a part of Smiths Group plc
, holds key positions in the supply chains of all major military and civil aircraft and engine manufacturers and is world-leader in electronic systems, actuation systems, precision components and detection systems.
