I personally don't care what kind of alternatives are made available. Would be nice if we could replace both gasoline and diesel with bio-fuels.
Move from petroleum to alcohol. Fast.

The primary consideration must be that they be renewable and not compete with established food commodities, such as corn.
Phase out the ethanol subsidy.
Phase out the ethanol import tariff.
Phase out the sugar import tariff.

Even should people start eating algae burgers, the ability to scale up production, and the growth rate of algae, should compensate.
I'd like to see industries bubble their carbon dioxide emissions into ponds, have algae turn it into biomass, and convert that to methanol.
But hold the algae burger.
