The entire concept of accepting limitations is a difficult one for America. Our national ethos is based on continuing expansion - we have never witnessed otherwise. The American Dream. It's similar to our inability to accept limits in health care, to accept mortality. We seem to seek eternal youth.

For some reason, all people find it so very difficult to go from the top to being just another participant. We measure ourselves relative to others - no matter how wealthy or powerful we are, if someone else is above us we don't like it. But we are going to have to accept it.

I wonder if studying the decline of the Brits would be instructive to us.
