Boston's suburbs leading way in voter turnout, Galvin says

On a day that may see a record number of voters heading to the polls, turnout is strongest so far in those Boston suburbs with contested congressional races, Secretary of State William R. Galvin said this afternoon.

"What we are seeing is that the interest in the congressional races is really what is stimulating the turnout,'' Galvin said in a telephone interview. He said that in Marshfield, which is in the hotly contested 10th Congressional District, 25 percent of the town had already voted before noon.

Galvin said turnout in Boston, a Democratic stronghold, is steady, but not as intense because congressional campaigns are minimal or non-existent. He also said Boston election officials have learned from the past and are managing the process effectively.
