Actually there is little threat to CURRENT retiree benefits. In fact Republicans were protesting Medicare cost cuts, which were part of the health care bill -- remember the tea party sign "keep government off my Medicare". The big threat is to future retirees, which the current retirees don't seem to care about. So, current retirees voting Republican does makes sense, in a selfish sort of way.
