The parties think that getting a majority is a mandate that their political and economic theories rule. The Repubs think that their majority means they have the mandate to repeal health care. That is not true. Or that they can for the next 2 years continue to oppose Obama to ensure that he is a "one termer".

The Democrats also thought that they had the mandate to do what they wished. And that stimulus was something that they had not thought through. Unfortunately the stimulus was more of a dole handed out to the poor folks instead of spending more on infrastructure. The funds did save the jobs of some folks like police and fire. But they failed to create jobs.

Anyway, it is a fickle American public still traumatized by the 9/11 attacks as manifested by failed steps such as the two wars, collapse of the financial system in the face of tax breaks during war. Add to the election of 2008 and 2010. I may be wrong but my sense now is that Obama will be reelected in 2012 (personal popularity) and the Dems will come back. should that happen with Congress, then it would complete the cycle of fickle mindedness of the American public.
