You might be interested to know that yesterday all the streetlights on my street were replaced with LED bulbs. I found a link describing this project -- 40% savings, eventually $2.4 million per year (probably including the lower maintenance). And by lowering city demand, capacity is available to service new homes or businesses here or sold elsewhere.

The light is oddly white, just slightly cool white, after seeing mercury vapor or sodium vapor lamps for my entire life up until last night. Very pleasing, and there should be fewer outages in the coming years.
