I bought a couple LED bulbs three or four years ago, not nearly bright enough nor uniform. I know they are much better now, and already just 1/2 the price, yet I'll wait a while now that I have a better idea of what I want and how they still aren't particularly bright.

One of the best features, ultimately, will be the elimination of the mercury issue as with the CFCs. Solar powered is an interesting idea, but I suspect only for remote and unwired areas as the price would be quite high. But that, too, will get cheaper and I'm sure pent up needs will spring forth.
