Pelosi was majority leader when the Repubs had the House and dems finally started making their move to take it back. She knows how to play from that position. She will put people in place to strengthen recruiting of candidates and supporting them. When she was speaker and Hoyer Majority leader, he undermined her and the majority of dems time and again. Now it looks like he will be out, finally. and if they take back the house in '12, or close the gap, they will be in a much stronger position than even before with him out of leadership - he doesn't have his slew of bluedogs to bolster him anymore.
Don't forget that while some on the left were howling for impeachment or some grand gesture toward Bush and Cheney from '06 to '08, she snuffed that out... for the overall good of the country, and even if some see her as polarizing, she didn't let the dem party be dragged into it, rather they were calm and not vindictive, and the country, at large, saw that.
We need to bringing younger members along toward stepping into leadership positions, but there is only one Queen for now.
With a smaller, but stronger and more cohesive block of dems, I wouldn't be surprised to see a decent immigration bill drafted and it will be up the repubs to nix it or not. |
