People choosing to vote are a self selected sample.

OTOH they are an enormously larger sample, and the sample doesn't get distorted in ways that other samples can be, for example if you call people to get responses, you don't get people without phones, with unpublished numbers, or who reject participation in the poll; regular polls are not truly random either.
