In most cases firms that just meet quarterly estimates will fall. If you happen to see a stock that meets or falls short of the estimate and stays unchanged or goes up that is the stock to accumulate. I believe the source of the quarterly estimate is from Red Chip Review. Somehow I have had the poor luck of owning other stocks that RCR analyzes and a similar problem has developed with VARL.(VARL's estimate was .12 and they made .11 compared to .05 in the same quarter in 1996 yet the stock is virtually unchanged from last year). RCR tends to be overly agressive in their numbers because they do not make a market in any securities. They can be objective and attempt to match the number because they will not directly profit as would a firm who makes a market in the security. The catch 22 continues, the stock will also not go up if there is an upgrade in earnings because again RCR does not make a market. It would be in our interest and subscribers of RCR if their number was excluded on the internet. This year I have accurately picked companies with much better earnings than last year with the exception of ANET and AXC and have not been rewarded at all. The only firms that I have done well with are concept stocks (internet telephony plays) and firms with growing earnings that did not have any analyst coverage. RCR has definitely been a giant killer and in the future I am going to avoid any stock that RCR is the sole source of earnings estimates.
