Norm Dicks (Democrat from WA) likely top Dem on Appropriations
Rep. Norm Dicks intends to succeed David Obey as the top Democrat on House Appropriations Committee, as well as keep his top spot on the Defense subpanel.

Dicks’ chief of staff, George Behan, tells POLITICO that the Washington Democrat “has spoken with nearly all of the Democratic Caucus, in addition to the newly elected Democratic members,” regarding the spending committee.

Dicks last week was elected to his 18th term in Congress. Last year, he succeeded Rep. Jack Murtha as the chairman of the Defense subcommittee, and will maintain his role as the top Democrat on that subpanel, Behan said. Obey is retiring at the end of the year.

In a recent interview with the Kitsap Sun, Dicks said he hopes the spending panel is able to maintain a bipartisan work ethic, but it’s unclear how the Republican majority will go about writing spending bills.

“We’re just going to have to wait until they submit their budget,” Dicks told the paper, “and the president will have a budget. I hope we can pass our bills. I hope we can find the appropriate balance. But it is going to be messy.”
