Once upon a time I flew a little plane with stand on pedals. 'Twas a Schweizer 1-26, 500 pounds tops and no engine. That was serious fun, dancing with the air and not simply powering through it.

Good sf these days? Wish I could say. Stephen Baxter wrote a tome called "Evolution" which was pretty good even if not particularly optimistic about H. sap.

I recently read a lot of S. M. Stirling. Escapist stuff about moderns in the Bronze Age or an event that killed almost all technology, but very nicely plotted and characterized. Headed toward fantasy (to which I do not generally gravitate) I will read anything&everything by Lois McMaster Bujold. She did write an extensive and excellent series of non-magic-infested sf; the first in the series is called "Shards of Honor".

cheers js
