you don’t propose a plan that involves large cuts in income taxes. Even if those cuts are offset by supposed elimination of tax breaks elsewhere

Now serious readers of Krugman have to admit he is out of character here. All of a sudden he is worried about the deficit because they want to simplify tax returns? The guy has to be on meds.

What the commission wants to do is eliminate the mysterious labyrinth of deductions. Who doesn't want to do that? Only tax preparers. The rest of us struggle with the wasteful mess of paperwork and lost time as we struggle with IRS returns. Good job Commission - bad criticism Krugman.
