Steve,

OSPF is not a Cisco proprietary protocol. Also, OSPF is not necessarily a replacement for RIP/RIP2, but rather is a more powerful routing protocol that is more appropriate for large, enterpise networks with lots of intentional path redundancies. As I understand it, OSPF will reconverge far faster than will RIP when segment outages occur and uses less network bandwidth overall.
