I did read your post that included total tax receipts and income tax receipts. I don't think it is appropriate to view contributions to social security as the same as income tax.

In your current post, you advocate a flat tax system with no deductions or a something close to that. While each us might implement it differently, I do not disagree with that general concept so there is common ground there between us. I think some version of a tax simplification plan (fewer deductions, lower rates or flatter taxes) would be very popular. I'm not sure why Obama would not want to grab that idea and champion it. I think that would be a winning issue for him and he would finally be on the side of something that would poll well.
