What is this thing with Rail infrastructure? If it is such a wonderful thing, why can't it pay for itself?

Good question actually. IMM it is because oil gets a free ride. We fight wars to protect our oil supply which makes oil a subsidized product. Roads and bridges are often likewise subsidized through earmarks - think of Palin's road to nowhere. You won't go along with this but it is true nonetheless; GW and increased allergies and increased asthma are other unfunded cost to using oil.

BUT, the big reason is that since oil is a finite resource we will run out at some point. We can argue about when that will occur, but it will occur. So why not plan for the future now?
