ManyMoose, I wrote to MSNBC yesterday and they were kind enough to respond and share their research with me.

I was mistaken!

I got out of the Corps in 1971. Back then, only NCO's and Staff NCO's were able to wear the blood stripe.

I contacted several former Marine buddies last night and those who were in at the time I was in, recall it the same way. Officers were not allowed to wear the NCO blood stripe.

I spoke to a couple of former Marines who were recently released and they said the Officer Corps convinced the Marine Corps to change the rules where Junior Officers can now wear the NCO blood stripe. Neither of my buddies knew when the rule was changed!

The officers at one time had a narrow red stripe, not the wide NCO stripe.

Officers! Sheesh!
