Looking at politics through the lens of religious demographics could explain an awful lot about American politics. No point in going back and forth on each individual issue, if the causes of our positions are more basic than that. Until the underlying assumptions are agreed upon, or a compromise worked out, no issue can be resolved.

Perhaps the shift to the right in America is demogrpahic. Lots of discussion on the web about demographics and religious fundamentalists - the rational secularists don't breed much but the fundamentalists are apparently sex maniacs.

I think it may also be due to the decline of WASP-power - liberal secularism hoisted on its own petard The moderate Republicans have become quite the impotent minority - back in the day you hade your choice of a WASP liberal and a WASP conservative.
