We have myriad varieties of bacteria, fungi etc. They all use the one genetic code for their various genomes. Is that nonsense?

As for how the genetic code appeared, and by extension how life started, that is a big question to which we don't have the answer(s). Whether one espouses directed or random design/emergence, I suggest it is reasonable to assume that the transition from lifelessness to first life occurred in consonance with the laws of nature, specifically chemistry.

The famous Miller-Urey experiment showed how easily some of the biochemical building blocks can be made in a simple soup tailored to mimic early terrestrial conditions. It's a big step from a few amino acids and nucleic bases to a complete cellular machine. Give scientists a few centuries, however, and they probably will be able to draw an unbroken line from earth's primordial surface to a cell. That won't prove conclusively how it happened, but knowing how it *could* have happened without someone minding the incubator ... that will be cool. It would help toward illuminating one of the big mysteries of natural philosophy.
