Your point is well taken. Why compete with / belabour something you can't beat in the shorter term.
The country which cannot reinvent itself on a continuous basis is toast. Countries like Germany, Japan, Korea +++ did it years ago. Now the BRIC countries are doing it. Just look at Russia. It took a near meltdown to make it happen.

Short term fluctuations aside, commodities (primarily food) will set the direction.
