We can follow evolution through the fossil record. The timelines of overall evolutionary cgange and geological ordering of fossils are compatible. But speciation happens too fast for the fossil record to show what happens when. Species begin and end suddenly, and they are remarkably immutable in between. Random mutation is a firmly-established bit of biology, but the sort of coordinated and adaptive mutations that must occur during a speciation event ... we don't have anything like a scientific scaffold for that yet.
Whether or not we posit a divine helmsman orchestrating a speciation ... elucidating the natural events from a scientific perspective ough to be fascinating.
