Salah: I tried to e-mail you, must have bounced. There is no URL for the article (of which I'm aware), I read it on grodie paper. The publication is free, I get it monthly. If you're interested, I can get you subscription information out of my next issue and post it here.
By the way, while I agree with you in the short-term concerning the fact that NT workstation versus server sales are apples and oranges, the "pull-through" of the desktop (be it workstation or Win95) was what Noorda was trying to address in his WordPerfect debacle. One interesting question is whether he was wrong in trying to address this (not if he did it correctly, but whether it's a fundamental issue).
Of all the posts I've done on this subject, with WAY too many words written, it seems I keep coming back to the issues that Noorda tried to solve: getting a desktop pull for NetWare and enabling NetWare to move up into the application server space encompassing the file server space.
Given that neither of these issues have been or are being addressed by Novell (that's why I've devoted so much time on this particular group, I wanted to understand if they were so I could buy Novell shares at what would then be a very low price), then it seems to me that the fundamental story on Novell hasn't changed. And since I'm not a trader, but a long-term investor, it doesn't seem to me that it would be smart for me to invest in the company at this point.
If this last paragraph irritates anyone reading it, and they'd like to set me right on this opinion, flames, gentle corrections, or whatever would be welcome.
Sincerely, Mark |
