Shiva, part III
nfoWorld: What is the role of Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) in terms of accessing the IP cloud
at faster rates?

Zucco: The debate about DSL is not a debate about 'if', it's a debate about 'when' in my view.
The original DSL requirements were driven by a fantasy that we were going to do video dial
tone over the telephone infrastructure. So the requirements were driven for 9Mb-10Mb DSL
which would allow broadcast-quality video. But the sweet spot of this market, I would argue, is
available today for 1MB version of DSL. Nortel has something called XNet they would like to
put in the public domain that's 1Mb downstream and 20Kb upstream that they maintain
operates on 99 percent of the local loop. We all know the primary application is called remote
Internet access. At 500Kb to 1 megabit, it would sell outrageously well if we can get at the
provisioning issues, which I think Nortel has solved and I know that Lucent has been working
on.

InfoWorld: You joined Shiva from Lucent. Are you here to clean up Shiva for Lucent to buy?

Zucco: I'm here because I'm really interested in the clash of titans in the last mile. If we look at
the wide area network, the lower layers are owned by the Alcatels, Lucents and Nortels of the
world. Cisco owns an overlay network based on routers that's not in the organic part of the
network. So from the standpoint of why I'm here, I recognize that it seems like a fun place to
play! I like to do things that are going to make a difference in the industry. And I didn't come
here to go to work for another big company.
