DISCUSSION GROUPS: EMBEDDED SYSTEMS (Revised 11/11/97)
=============================================================

Society for Information Management Year 2000 Working Group
year2000.unt.edu Free, immediate registration
If you're already registered, direct access to "embedded systems":
year2000.unt.edu

This topic list is to discuss potential and already known infrastructure-related Y2K Problems. The definintion we are using for "infrastructure" is any system that contains a microprocessor, particularly embedded-chip applications and "firmware". All microprocessors must be checked to see if they use a date function or are controlled by some system that uses and transmits a date function.

This definition includes, as examples, PCs, elevators, automated manufacturing systems, building energy management systems, traffic light control systems, televisions, VCRs, microwaves, bar code readers, credit card point of sale systems, ATM machines, etc.

This dicussion topic should center around any specific microprocessor-based system you have found to have problems, or one where you suspect there are problems. Awareness for this Year 2000 Problem area is going to be harder to achieve than awareness for mainframe problems.

Also the resources and time necessary to inventory, evaluate, convert, test, and implement fixes for the cloud of microprocessors your company, city, county, state, or home has may be considerably more than that already forecast for mainframe problems. Not because of any technical aspect, just because of the total number of microprocessors out there that need to be checked, changed/fixed, and tested. And because we IS professionals have not historically concerned ourselves with may of these applications
