Anxious wait for Bundy

ORCHARD Hills man Tex O’Grady has been fighting a law to allow his best mate Bundy to continue to ride on his motorcycle with him — and he might just win.

Bundy the blue heeler helps raise $400,000 a year for different causes, mainly prostate cancer, harnessed to Mr O’Grady on the bike.

A law change a couple of years ago prohibited animals from riding on the front (but allowed them to ride unrestrained on the back) and Mr O’Grady, who believes putting Bundy on the back would be unsafe, has been fighting for an exemption.

They hit a road bump recently when Mr O’Grady was nabbed by a police officer on the way home from a charity ride and fined for negligent driving for having Bundy on the front.

Not willing to risk losing his licence, Mr O’Grady said he wasn’t going to ride with her on the bike until he has the exemption in his hand.

He’s hoping the Roads Minister, who has asked the RTA to provide advice on how they could craft an exemption in fund-raising cases, can speed things along — he’s got another event on November 24.

Mr O’Grady said he was exceptionally grateful: ‘‘but how long?’’

He said in the meantime he would probably take his van, but it didn’t have the same effect as the motorcycle.

He said Bundy also make kids and adults alike smile in their cars as they drove past.

‘‘Is that such a big crime to put a smile on people’s faces?’’

Mr O’Grady said he had been pulled over in the past, but the officers had ended up donating.

Roads Minister David Borger said: ‘‘There are significant risks in travelling with pets in unenclosed vehicles like motorbikes.

‘‘It can pose a danger to the rider and to all other motorists.

‘‘I have nonetheless asked the RTA to provide advice to me on how we might craft an exemption in strictly limited cases where community fundraising efforts are involved and where the rider takes extra precautions to ensure the ongoing safety of all road users.’’
